Severe Duty Skid Plates for the E30 Chassis.

Let me introduce you to a new product from E30 Motor Werks, a severe duty skid plate. One of the biggest concerns in a lowered E30 is breaking the pan. And it is surprisingly common. I have seen busted pans, welded pans, cracked pans, lots of less then perfect pans. Now its time to put a stop to the pan smashing madness. Don't get mad, get even, our new skid plates are curb crushers.

There are other skid plates on the market some are of good quality, but they all share a single design and that design is flawed. In a typical skid plate the material extends forward and goes into a unsupported bend and then up to and bolting to the core support. While the core support is double walled material it is has a significant amount of deflection under a hard blow. The second problem is that there is no direct support at the bend of the plate, under a hard impact this can flex the plate upwards and still contact the oil pan. In some cases breaking the pan.

This is where our skid plate design differs. We have developed a very sturdy cross bar that the skid plate attaches to. You are no longer depending on the core support of the car or a unsupported plate to absorb impact loads. Instead the impact will be absorbed by the skid plate and hoop bar directly.

We further developed a 3 piece bar design so that the main hoop can be removed in the event the oil pan needs to be serviced such as gasket replacement. A 1 piece bar is also available by request for those that want the ultimate in strength. Both bar designs will also effectively act as a strut brace for the front of the frame rails, this will help to stiffen the front chassis. In addition the bar serves as a nice jacking point and will support the weight of the vehicle when placed under the bar.

This skid plate kit will require welding. The main hoop butt plates will need to be welded to the frame rails. This can be done by any experienced welder, muffler shop, trailer shop, anywhere a welder can be found.

I am sure many of you fear speed bumps and dips and have to slam on the brakes and do the sideways shuffle to get past them without dusting the oil pan.
